The origins of Mother's Day celebrated in the United States date back to the 19th century. In the years leading up to the American Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia helped create "Mother's Day Workshops" to teach local women to take good care of their children. .
These clubs then became a unifying force in a region of the country still divided by civil war. In 1868, Jarvis organized the "Mother's Friendship Day" where mothers met with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.
Julia Ward Howe, abolitionist and suffragette, is another precursor of Mother's Day. In 1870, Howe wrote the "Mother's Day Proclamation", a call to action that called on mothers to unite to promote peace in the world. In 1873, Howe campaigned for a "Mother's Day" to be celebrated every second June.
Other Mother's Day pioneers include Juliet Calhoun Blakely, a temperance activist who inspired Mother's Day in Albion, Michigan in the 1870s. Mary Towles Sasseen and Frank Hering, both worked to organize a Mother's Day in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Some even called Hering "the father of Mother's Day".
